e-waste collection as part of World Earth Day
DH News Service BANGALORE (21 April 2006).
In another initiative to battle the perils of electronic waste, an IT peripherals and solutions company and voluntary organisation, Saahas, have come together to establish e-waste collection centres in five locations in Bangalore. WeP Peripherals and Saahas will launch the centres — at The Forum in Koramangala, GK Vale on MG Road, Jayanagar and Indiranagar, Fabmall in Indiranagar and Bannerghatta Road, Safina Plaza and Fitness One in Jayanagar and Koramangala — on April 22, the World Earth Day.
The centres propose to collect e-waste products like dry cell batteries, CDs and floppies. Electronic waste recycling unit E-Parisaraa will be a partner in the initiative, by recycling the raw materials derived from the waste — like zinc and plastic — back into manufacturing. “The toxic material shall be stored and safely disposed in the hazardous waste facility which will shortly come up in Karnataka,†says Mr Parthasarathy, MD, E-Parisaraa.
Students join in
Saahas Co-ordinator Wilma Rodrigues says the organisation has already launched an initiative involving schools wherein students are asked to bring e-waste products from home and put them into collection boxes. Mr Deepak Chari, GM, Finance and Business Development, WeP Peripherals says the company is looking to extend its measures to tackle e-waste to other corporates and citizens through widespread collection, recovery and disposal of e-waste.
The company also invites volunteers to join in the network and set up their own collection centres. For details, call WeP Peripherals over Ph: 41182208 or email: vishakha.das@wepindia.com/ response@saahas.org
